Despite studying a traditionally male-dominated field (geology), I’ve gotten very lucky and avoided any mansplaining in college. However, I did not get this lucky when it came time to buy a car. I’m not a professional mechanic, but I spent much of my high school, college, and post-college years…

For many years I worked as a booth manager for several prominent jewelry designers. I needed a car that would fit the specific display system I as using and my concerns all had to do with the cargo area, the cubic footage and the space between the wheel wells. Many salesmen didn’t even hear me ask about the specs on the cargo space because they were too busy showing me the mirrors. I bought the car that I got to measure.
